This easy shelf canopy may look elaborate, yet it is a look that's easily duplicated.

It's created by hanging a fabric-covered shelf high over the bed. Gather fabric panels onto lengths of wire, doweling, or curtain rods, and attach these to the inside and outside of the shelf. Cover any nails or hardware with lengths of decorative cording or braid glued in place.

For a simpler look simply staple flat (or box-pleated) panels directly to the top of the shelf before attaching it to the wall. Most of these staples will be out of view on the top of the shelf behind the valance.

Lighting can be added to this treatment providing the shelf is deep enough to accommodate an appropriate light fixture. Use caution when selecting and installing lights, however, since placing them to close to fabric could be a fire hazard. Be sure to consult an electrician for suggestions.

	Lined Shelf Canopy Pretty floral fabric adorns the outside of these bed hangings. A plain white linen fabric has been used as the canopy lining (and on the headboard). Thick green silk cording dresses up the line of gathering at the top of the valance.
	Reading Lights A deep shelf canopy may allow room to install downlights perfect for reading in bed. Consult an electrician or home center for fixtures appropriate for your installation. Be certain to choose cool burning fixtures in the proximity of fabric valances. NEXT: Curtain Rod Canopy Project
