Furniture and Apparel for Children Goes Upscale

Are plastic chairs and simple poly/cotton knit apparel for kids over?

posh goes mainstream

Yes, baby furnishings and apparel for junior have gone luxe, with kids beds the price of cars and overalls made of cashmere.

Upscale items for children have always been in the market. But kid luxe went mainstream when merchants like Gap introduced a Babyluxe line and Pottery Barn began showing urban furniture in sophisticated looks for children.

Trend guru Faith Popcorn cites the increase in designer baby clothes as an example of "Small Indulgences", a trend that says it's OK to treat yourself and your loved ones. She also coined the term "cocooning" as "hunkering down...enjoying ourselves in our own homes."

Add to these lifestyle directions a general feeling of affluence that is kicking luxury purchases into high drive, and you have some of the societal and economic factors that are pushing kid luxe to the masses.
